the Soapstone Works is a small business in Lee, NH specializing in soapstone and hardwood countertops. This specialty is the result of choosing favored materials after many years of creating custom kitchens.
Owner Phil Boucher has been designing and building custom kitchens, furniture and millwork for over 35 years. Phil started and operated a successful architectural millwork business in the Washington, DC area for many years before deciding to relocate his family back to their New England roots. In recent years, Phil has concentrated on fine woodworking and cabinetry from his shop in Lee, NH. He has worked with many of the varied countertop materials at one time or another. Laminates, tile, solid surfaces, wood and granite are a just a few of them. Yet, his true favorites are soapstone and wood.
After partnering with Paul Bowles, founder of The Soapstone Works, he fell in love with soapstone. He thought it would be a nice compliment to his woodwork, but soon found that soapstone and wood counters would become his focus. Since getting the ‘soapstone fever’ Phil quickly learned that customers as well seem to love soapstone, most because it just feels so good to the touch, almost like worn leather. His passion for the properties, feel and functions of soapstone has led to this specialty with great pride.
In 2012, Paul began his transition into retirement and Phil took over the business full time.
Every project receives our full personal attention due to our bias for craftsmanship. The bulk of the stone cutting is done in our shop rather than on site, to guarantee the most control. Our customers can be assured their project is not ‘farmed out’ in any fashion.
We would be pleased to meet with homeowners, architects, designers and builders to discuss projects and the use of soapstone and wood surfaces. We recommend if you are considering our services you do so early in the planning stages to benefit from our expertise in the layout of the materials.
We travel to just about anywhere in the seacoast areas of Northern Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Southern Maine. Our main focus of work revolves around a sixty mile radius of Lee, NH.
